Santa Barbara, Calif., May 5, 2009 - Dominic Ventura, an EMT and pharmacy technician with the Red Cross, talks to an evacuee at the Red Cross Emergency Shelter at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, Calif. Even though around 1,000 homes were mandatorily evacuated, the shelter had only about twelve evacuees as of 10:30 pm. According to David Sadecki with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the fire began at around 1:45 pm today near the popular Jesusita Trail near Inspiration Point in San Roque Canyon. As of midnight more than 420 acres had burned and about 1,000 homes were evacuated, with about 2,000 threatened.
